Mark Sanford's disappearance and extramarital affair are a series of events in 2009 involving South Carolina governor Mark Sanford. Governor Sanford reported that in 2001 he met an Argentine woman whom he became friends with and started having a sexual relationship with in 2008. His wife became aware of the relationship in January 2009, but did not publicly announce this knowledge at the time.
Two weeks prior to June 24, 2009, Sanford and his wife began a trial separation that was not publicly announced until later.
The early history of the relationship between Chapur and Sanford was not publicly known until 2009. In 2001, the two individuals met at an open air dance in Uruguay. Chapur and Sanford met at a New York bistro in 2004. Two meetings in New York occurred later, one of them with Sanford accompanied by a spiritual advisor with the knowledge of Mrs. Sanford.
